Google Drive for Desktop: Understanding Shared Folders and Permissions

When you use Google Drive for Desktop, you may come across shared folders that have been shared with you by others. These folders can be a convenient way to collaborate on projects or access files that are important to your work or personal life. However, not all shared folders offer the same level of control and functionality.

Limited Capabilities in Shared Folders

If a folder has been shared with you but you do not have edit permission, you may find that the contents of the folder are not displayed to you within Google Drive for Desktop. This is done to prevent accidental changes or uploads that could lead to failure due to insufficient permissions. Despite this limitation, you can still access these folders by going to your 'Shared with Me' section.

Capabilities in Shared Folders

When you have been assigned the 'Can Download' or 'Can View' permission for a shared folder, you will be able to perform certain actions within that folder:

• Move files using drag and drop within the shared folder structure

• Open, sync, free up space, view online, copy link, export, delete, rename files

• Add or update files through an authoring application or by dragging and dropping them into the folder

Operations That Can Be Performed on Files and Folders

It's important to note that only the owner of a shared folder can perform certain operations within that folder. These include:

• Renaming files

• Deleting files

• Moving files

Unfortunately, you will not be able to rename, delete, or move the shared folder itself.
